DXB is the world's busiest international airport, and a huge number of people pass through it with hours to kill. The terminal is fine — but Dubai is 15 minutes away by metro, and a surprising amount of it is free. Here's exactly what fits into 6, 12 and 24 hours, plus the two questions everyone asks first.
Do you need a visa to leave DXB on a layover?
If you stay airside on a single through-ticketed connection and never pass immigration, you need nothing at all. One important exception, and it catches exactly the people who booked the cheapest way: Dubai Airports states that guests transiting through DXB on separate tickets must clear passport control, collect their bags and check in again for the onward flight. So a self-transfer means you need UAE entry clearance even if you never intended to leave the terminal. To leave the airport, you must clear UAE immigration like any other visitor. Whether that's free and instant depends entirely on your passport (checked July 2026):
- GCC citizens — free entry.
- Dozens of other nationalities get a free visa on arrival — but at two different lengths, and it is worth knowing which one is yours. UK and EU/Schengen passports get up to 90 days in any 180-day period (that is how both the UK Foreign Office and Germany's Federal Foreign Office state it). US, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, New Zealand, Singaporean and South Korean passports get a free 30-day stamp. For most of our readers in this group, walking out of DXB costs nothing but the queue.
- The UAE government's official visa-on-arrival list changes without much notice, and it has recently added conditional entries — some nationalities qualify only if they also hold residence in a listed country. Check u.ae for your own passport before you travel rather than trusting any list, including this one.
- Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and many African and Asian passports generally need a visa arranged before travel. Indian passport holders with a valid US visa, US green card or UK/EU residence permit have historically had access to a separate short on-arrival facility, but the terms and fee change — confirm with your airline or the UAE's official channels before you count on it.
Two practical notes: budget 45–90 minutes for immigration and security in each direction at peak times, and if you have checked bags that aren't tagged through, DXB has 24/7 left luggage — around AED 35–40 for 12 hours for a standard bag (Emirates Left Luggage at Terminal 3, dnata Baggage Services at Terminal 1).
If you have 6 hours
Realistically 2–3 hours in the city, so pick one thing and do it properly. The best option is Old Dubai — it's the closest, cheapest and most different from the airport.
Take the Metro Red Line from the station at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, change at Union onto the Green Line, and ride to Al Ras. Walk the Gold Souk and Spice Souk, then cross Dubai Creek on a wooden abra boat for exactly 1 dirham (~$0.27) — the best-value "cruise" on the planet. Eat in Al Fahidi's historic district: Emirati or Indian food, $5–8. Then reverse the trip.
The Metro runs roughly 5am to midnight, later on Fridays and with a later start on Sundays — check the day's timings before you plan a dawn or late-night dash, because a taxi back at 1am costs many times the fare.
If you have 12 hours
Now you have roughly 8–9 usable hours: two anchors plus travel. The strongest pairing is Downtown in the daytime, Old Dubai after — or the reverse if your layover ends late, so you finish on the fountain show.
☀️ Burj Khalifa, the smart way
Book the 124th-floor "At the Top" early-morning slot — it's the cheapest ticket of the day and the desert haze is thinnest before 10am. Booking online in advance is significantly cheaper than the walk-up price, and on a layover a timed slot is the difference between seeing it and queuing for it. Metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall on the Red Line, then allow 10–15 minutes to walk through the mall to the entrance.
🕌 Old Dubai
Exactly as in the 6-hour plan above — souks, the 1-dirham abra, lunch in Al Fahidi.
⛲ The Dubai Fountain
If your timing lands in the evening, come back to Downtown for the fountain show — completely free, every 30 minutes from 6pm, best watched from the bridge to Souk Al Bahar. A five-star finale that costs nothing, and a perfect last stop before the metro back.
If you have 24 hours
A full day, and enough time to add the two things that don't fit into a short window: the beach and the desert.
🏖️ Morning: Kite Beach
Free entry, Burj Al Arab views, and a long boardwalk. Swim, then grab breakfast from a beach kiosk.
🛥️ Midday: Dubai Marina
Walk the full Marina promenade between the skyscrapers, or take the cheap ferry across for skyline views from the water.
🌅 Afternoon: desert safari
Pickups run around 3pm: dune bashing, camel rides, sunset photos, BBQ dinner under the stars, usually back by 9–10pm. Prices vary wildly between operators for the same trip — compare online instead of booking through a hotel desk. Only do this if your onward flight is the next morning; a safari plus airport transfer is not something to squeeze against a hard check-in deadline.
⛲ Or, the low-stress version
Swap the safari for the 12-hour plan at a relaxed pace: Burj Khalifa, the souks, a long lunch and the fountain show, with an actual hotel nap in between.
Can you get a free layover hotel?
Sometimes — and it is the single best-value thing on this page. Emirates' Dubai Connect gives eligible transit passengers a free hotel room, transfers, meals and, where needed, a visa. It is not automatic. The conditions, as of July 2026:
- The whole journey on one booking, on an Emirates ticket, international-to-international, marketed and operated by Emirates.
- A qualifying connection window. Emirates' published terms state that the gap between your inbound arrival in Dubai and your outbound departure must be at least 6 hours and no more than 26 hours; some regional versions of the same terms set the minimum at 8 hours instead, and a longer minimum in Economy is widely reported. Check what your own booking shows rather than assuming a number.
- No significantly shorter valid connection available in the same cabin and fare — you can't manufacture eligibility by picking the slow option.
- Deeply discounted promo fares are usually excluded.
Eligibility is flagged automatically at emirates.com when you book a qualifying itinerary, so the move is to check it at booking time, not at the airport. Other hub carriers run similar transit-hotel schemes with their own rules — always the airline's own programme, never a general right.
If you don't qualify, DXB has paid sleep pods and transit hotels inside the terminals, which are still cheaper than a landside hotel once you've counted two immigration queues and two taxi fares.
